The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, is a powerful alliance of 10 member states, founded on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok, Thailand. It all began with the visionary Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Over time, the alliance expanded, welcoming Brunei Darussalam in 1984, Viet Nam in 1995, Lao PDR and Myanmar in 1997, and finally, Cambodia in 1999.
A Journey to Unity
In 2009, ASEAN leaders declared their roadmap for a unified community, and in 2015, their vision became a reality. The ASEAN Community, built on three robust pillars - the Political-Security Community, Economic Community, and Socio-Cultural Community - was officially launched. This marked a significant step towards regional integration and cooperation.
ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together
In 2015, ASEAN introduced its Post-2015 Vision, known as ASEAN 2025: Forging Ahead Together. This vision encompasses the ASEAN Community Vision 2025, along with blueprints for each of its community pillars, including the Political-Security Community, Economic Community, and Socio-Cultural Community.
