A desperate plea for help has been issued by the sister of a Palestine Action-linked prisoner, Kamran Ahmed, who is one of six activists on a hunger strike. Shahmina Alam, 33, fears for her brother's life as he enters his fourth week without food, along with five other prisoners.
The rolling hunger strike, which began in early November, has sparked growing concern for the safety of these activists. Two of them were hospitalized last week, and with no response from the government, the situation is becoming dire.
"I'm terrified every time I speak to him," Alam said. "I feel like this could be our last conversation. Are we waiting for a tragedy to unfold before the government takes action?"
Alam, a pharmacist, has been deeply affected by her brother's hospitalization. She described the lack of updates on his condition as agonizing, causing her to have panic attacks and palpitations.
"His ketone levels are rising, and his sugar levels are dropping," she revealed. "Doctors told him he has acidic blood and arrhythmia. I dread receiving another call that he's being taken to the hospital again."
Ahmed, along with Teuta Hoxha, Jon Cink, Heba Muraisi, Qesser Zuhrah, and Amu Gib, are all accused of participating in actions before Palestine Action was banned. They have been in prison for over a year and are awaiting trial.
The legal challenge to the ban on Palestine Action concluded this week, with judges reserving their decision. Meanwhile, the hunger strike continues, with the activists demanding immediate bail, an end to the ban on Palestine Action, and the removal of communication restrictions.
Qesser Zuhrah's best friend, Ella Moulsdale, shared her concerns: "She's in a lot of pain, especially in her joints. It's hard to watch her body deteriorate slowly. But I'm proud of her commitment to fighting back and reclaiming her autonomy."
The hunger strike has been compared to the historic IRA prisoner strike led by Bobby Sands. Moulsdale criticized the government's lack of engagement, stating, "They let the Irish hunger strikers starve to death in 1981."
A Prison Service spokesperson said, "Any prisoner needing hospital treatment is taken immediately."
