Pillars of Eternity Surprise Turn-Based Mode Update! Obsidian RPG News (2025)

Pillars of Eternity, the beloved isometric RPG from Obsidian Entertainment, is getting a surprising twist with the introduction of a turn-based mode in a new update. This mode, available in a public beta for PC starting November 5, offers a fresh way to experience the game's combat, slowing down the action and providing a more tactical approach. The update builds upon the optional turn-based mode in the sequel, Pillars of Eternity: Deadfire, released in 2018. Obsidian's director, Josh Sawyer, explains in a trailer that the new mode aims to adapt characters' stats for turn-based combat while maintaining the flexibility to switch between real-time and turn-based modes effortlessly. This update comes as Obsidian continues to explore new frontiers in gaming, with recent releases like The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, and the early access title Grounded 2 on the horizon. The studio's return to Eora, the game's setting, in Avowed, showcases their ability to translate their unique RPG systems into different genres. With the turn-based mode, Obsidian invites players to immerse themselves in a new way of playing, offering a blend of strategic depth and accessibility. The public beta is a chance for players to provide feedback, shaping the future of this classic RPG.
